Double Cylinder Rack and Pinion Actuator
Double cylinder rack and pinion actuator has two cylinders and two racks but has only one pinion as shown in the animation. The two cylinders are placed side by side rigidly with a provision at the center to allow the racks to mate with the pinion. Movements of the two racks are opposite to each other so that the pinion rotates in one direction freely. Since two racks drives the pinion from opposite sides load distribution is even on the output shaft. Pressurized oil is introduced into the cylinder through port F of both cylinders simultaneously to rotate the pinion in clock wise direction and pressurized oil is introduced into the cylinder through port R of both cylinders to rotate the pinion in counter clock wise direction. The direction change in fluid flow is accomplished by using a four way direction control valve.
