In this video, Dr. William Guerrero will tell you about the case of a hypertensive patient whose heart became enlarged, weak, and sluggish. The hypertension caused a complication called heart failure.

What is high blood pressure?

High blood pressure is a condition that puts you at risk for a heart attack, stroke, and kidney disease. It often doesn't cause symptoms, but it can be serious.

When your doctor or nurse tells you your blood pressure, they give you two numbers. For example, your doctor or nurse might tell you that your blood pressure is "130 over 80." The top number is the pressure inside your arteries when your heart contracts. The bottom number is the pressure inside your arteries when your heart is relaxed.

Elevated systolic blood pressure (SBP) is a stronger predictor than diastolic blood pressure. Both show a strong association with cardiovascular risk, including stroke (being its main risk factor), coronary artery disease, heart failure, kidney failure, and peripheral artery disease. (This was a question on the MIR exam)

Blood pressure (BP) above 120/80 mmHg is the leading risk factor for illness and death worldwide.

This is very unfortunate, because hypertension is a silent killer and the leading cause of disability worldwide.

In Spain, the prevalence of high blood pressure (hypertension) in the adult population ranges from 33% to 43%, and increases with age, exceeding 60% in those over 65.

The level of awareness (around 60%) and overall control (around 25%) are low.

How can I lower my blood pressure?

If your doctor or nurse has prescribed blood pressure medication, the most important thing you can do is take it. If you experience side effects, do not stop taking it. Instead, talk to your doctor or nurse about the problems it is causing. They may be able to lower your dose or switch you to a different medication. If cost is a concern, mention it. They may be able to prescribe a less expensive medication. Taking your blood pressure medication can prevent a heart attack or stroke—and it can save your life!

What can I do on my own?

You have a lot of control over your blood pressure. To lower it:

●Lose weight (if you are overweight).

●Choose a low-fat diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy products.

●Eat less salt.

●Be active for at least 30 minutes a day, most days of the week.

●Drink less alcohol and ideally stop.

It’s also a good idea to have a blood pressure monitor at home. People who monitor their own blood pressure at home get better results in keeping it low and can sometimes even reduce the amount of medication they take.
