Essentially it uses an exploit--when mobs destroy the moonstone it has a 50% chance to drop 2 moonrocks instead of 1--so every time you fixes it up you get 1.5 moonrocks back on average.
I revised Lakhnish Monster's strategy a bit, swapping the Forest Stalker with Bearger, which in my opinion is easier and not bounded by night cycle (albeit it is restricted with the seasonal cycles).
