"Pinnawala Elephant Sanctuary is one of Sri Lanka's top tourist destinations. I need to make it extremely clear that the
eatment of elephants here DOES NOT represent any other organisation in the country.
But I need to make the facts about this Pinnawala Elephant Sanctuary extremely clear.
The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage was established by the Sri Lankan Department of Wildlife Conservation in 1975 for feeding and providing care and sanctuary to orphaned baby elephants that were found in the wild.[7]ย The orphanage was located at theย Wilpattu National Park, then shifted to the tourist complex atย Bentotaย and then to theย Dehiwala Zoo. From the Zoo it was shifted to Pinnawala village on a 25-acre (10ย ha)ย coconutย plantation adjacent to theย Maha Oyaย River.
"The elephants inside the orphanage were injured or abandoned and they were brought to the orphanage so they don't die."
I agree. But that does not justify the living conditions of these elephants.
The elephants are chained up for 20 hours every day, unable to move, and the reason for this is so us humans can get close to them and view the elephants
The sanctuary is also PROUD of the fact that they have bred 80 elephants, and they sell elephants to zoos across the world. So now this is very clearly not a sanctuary, they are breeding captive elephants that will spend a life in an enclosure which is much smaller than what they need.
I did not see any carers wanting to harm the elephants intentionally, so I believe they do actually care,
There are many other sanctuaries in Sri Lanka that treat elephants perfectly, or go see them in a national park.
Pinnawala Elephant Sanctuary is very clearly set up as a tourist attraction, not a sanctuary.
