In preparation for testing the R-16 intercontinental ballistic missile, the second stage engine began spontaneously starting at 18:45. as a result of this launch, the rocket exploded and broke into several pieces 74 people died in the disaster (according to official data), including the commander-in-chief of the missile forces of the Soviet Union, Mitrofan Ivanovich Nedelin.
