My father learned to play the flute as a child in the 1970's. He was a shepherd and often made instruments to pass the time. He became known for his music in nearby villages, and would often be asked to play at parties and gatherings.
In 1978, the Iraqi army ordered my family's village (gundê Benê) to be evacuated. They were eventually taken to a settlement near Hewlêr.
That is around the time when my father stopped playing the flute, until just recently, when I encouraged him to pick it up again.
