TDS or Tax Deducted at Source is a tax collection mechanism used by the government to collect tax revenue. It is the amount that is deducted from the income of an individual or a business at the time of making a payment. TDS is deducted by the person making the payment, and the deducted amount is paid to the government on behalf of the recipient.
The main reason why TDS is deducted is to ensure that the government receives a steady stream of tax revenue throughout the year. By deducting a portion of the income at the time of payment, the government can avoid situations where taxpayers fail to pay their taxes at the end of the year, resulting in a shortfall of revenue.
TDS is applicable to a wide range of payments, including salaries, interest on fixed deposits, rent, and professional fees. The rate of TDS varies depending on the nature of the payment and the applicable tax laws.
In this article, we will delve deeper into the concept of TDS and explore why it is deducted, how it works, and the various types of payments that attract TDS. We will also discuss the importance of TDS compliance for both taxpayers and the government.
