Located in New Haven, CT, Common Ground is a center for learning and leadership, inviting people across ages and identities to connect to their urban environment, build community, grow into their full potential, and contribute to a just and sustainable world. We do this through three interwoven entities: the nation’s longest-running public environmental charter high school, a community environmental education center, and our urban farm which models practices of sustainable agriculture and contributes to a healthy food system for New Haven residents.
An integral part of our farming practice is amending our soil with compost. On our farm, we process THOUSANDS of pounds of raw materials on our site to make compost for our garden. In 2020 Common Ground and the City of New Haven's Food System Policy Division (FSPD) received one of the first-ever Community Compost and Food Waste Reduction Project grants from the USDA. This collaboration allowed us to expand our compost facility so that we now have the physical infrastructure to process over 45,000 lbs of food waste per year.
This year alone, we have diverted close to 40,000 lbs of food waste from the landfill! Through our initiative, students, staff, and community members throughout New Haven bring their food scraps to our site for composting. This collective waste from our campus (school lunches, weeds from the gardens, animal bedding, and manure) and our community (kitchen scraps, leaves, etc) are processed by staff, our partners at Peels and Wheels and our High School Green Jobs Corps Program, and break down to make rich compost.
