Megan’s Law was enacted in 1996.
• Who is Megan?
Megan Kanka was a 7-year-old from Hamilton Township, New Jersey. She was raped and murdered by a registered sex offender who lived across the street.
Megan’s parents made it their mission to push laws that identifies the location of convicted sex offenders in every community.
•What is the law about?
Sex Offenders must: notify local law enforcement about every change of address or employment.
Law Enforcement Agencies must: release registered sex offender information to the public.
• New Jersey passed the first Megan’s Law in 1995… then President Clinton signed it into federal law in 1996.
• Thanks to Megan’s Law,
1. Law enforcement is assisted in investigations
2. Legal grounds are established to hold known offenders
3. Sex offenders are deterred from committing new offenses
4. Citizens are informed with pertinent information to protect their children
