Coulomb's Law is a fundamental principle in physics that describes the electrostatic force between two charged particles. It is named after the French physicist Charles-Augustin de Coulomb, who first formulated this law in the late 18th century.

Coulomb's Law states that the electrostatic force between two charged particles is directly proportional to the product of their charges and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them. Mathematically, it can be expressed as:

F = k * (q1 * q2) / r^2

where:
F is the electrostatic force between the two charged particles,
k is the electrostatic constant (also known as Coulomb's constant) and has a value of approximately 9 x 10^9 N m^2/C^2,
q1 and q2 are the magnitudes of the charges of the two particles,
r is the distance between the centers of the two particles.

It is important to note that the charges should be of the same sign for the force to be repulsive, and opposite signs for an attractive force.

Coulomb's Law applies to point charges or charged particles that are small in size compared to the distance between them. The law forms the basis for understanding the behavior of electric fields, the movement of charges, and the interaction between charged objects.

In Class 12, Coulomb's Law is typically introduced as part of the study of electrostatics in physics. It helps students understand the quantitative relationship between electric charges and the forces they exert on each other. It also provides a foundation for further concepts like electric fields, electric potential, and capacitance.
