Is Stuttering Genetic/Hereditary? | Husband and Sons Stutter
In this video, I'll discuss my two boys who both stutter along with their father. So, Is Stuttering Genetic/Hereditary? Usually, those who stutter say that they have family relatives who stutter. However, not all those who stutter have a relative who stutters. Environment factors and random anomalies can contribute to stuttering as well.
With studies conducted on twins, scientists have found that stuttering is genetically passed down in most cases. However, it does not mean that both twins will stutter. Scientists have not been able to find one gene that links stuttering, so it may be several different genes that trigger stuttering in children, so it is possible both parents could have a few genes, but when linked together the mixed genes genetically predisposes that child to stutter, even if neither the mother or father stuttered.
For example, my husband's father stuttered. His father stuttered, but his father's brother did not stutter nor did his sister. My husband stutters, but his mother does not, nor does either of his sisters. We have two boys, both of them stutter.
