The majority of gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding is evaluated and managed with upper and/or lower endoscopy. However, some patients will have a GI bleed that is not accessible or amenable to endoscopic management, and these patients will require emergent surgical intervention to control life-threatening hemorrhage. This session reviews the initial evaluation, localization, as well as surgical management of severe upper and lower GI bleeding.
