Today, Islam is the second-largest religion, with adherents representing a quarter of the world's population, or approximately 1.9 billion people. The Islamic ummah (or community) is represented in 120 countries, of which 35 are majority-population.
Nevertheless, despite its impressive geographic and demographic reach, within the Islamic world there are contradictions between various movements and schools, dating back centuries to the origins of Islamic self-awareness.

In today's program, we will briefly examine the most acute and significant schism within the Islamic ummah, which led to the formation of the two most widely represented communities in the Islamic world – Sunnis and Shiites.
