Amplifying African Voices in Climate Activism — Environmentalist Vanessa Nakate | Highlights
Vanessa Nakate, a globally recognized Ugandan climate activist and UNICEF Global Ambassador, is the founder of the Green Schools Project and the Rise Up Movement. In 2019, she launched the Green Schools Project to install solar panels and clean stoves in Ugandan schools, providing sustainable electricity to classrooms and offices.
Rise Up unites diverse groups to amplify stories and opportunities, particularly around the climate crisis. Nakate emphasizes that climate disasters go beyond rising temperatures, affecting hospitals, schools, and farms. She believes true leadership is about serving people, and climate education should start early, laying the foundation for future environmental advocates.
With the different ages, the way you speak and educate is important. It’s important to start from a young age because then you’re setting the foundation of what these young people are going to be as they continue to grow up. That foundation may be from starting to talk about them about the importance of protecting your favorite animal. It may be ensuring that their favorite bud is protected. That is what they understand, can comprehend. But eventually that grows into someone who is really vocal about the environment.
