The Rounded Rectangle Tool
How often do you use the rounded rectangle tool? Almost never right?The rounded rectangle tool comes in handy as we create our icon. The rounded rectangle tool helps us create are shape and there are enough options available for us to be really specific.
Sampling Colors
Next we sample colors from the actual iOS 8 app and use a gradient to color our rounded rectangle.
Logo and Finishing Touches
Next we place our logo right in the center of our shape using some alignment tools. And to finish it all off we add a drop shadow, turn the background transparent, and save it out as a png file.
From A Designer Which May Come Handy - I'm an experienced app developer. Here are some additional notes to go alongside this video:
1) Your canvas should be no less than 1024px^2, not 1000px^2 as is demonstrated. This is especially important if you have any raster (painted) layers. The largest exported image required by Apple is this power of two. I personally work in 2048.
2) Apple requires that your app icons do not use the rounded corners in the graphic itself. The corners are added by the system, in case they ever want to change their design. This is still a fantastic tutorial for using the rounded rectangle tool, and I always place one in my layer stack to ensure I'm within the safe zone of the icon.
3) Similarly, your app icon cannot be submitted with a drop shadow. This too is added by the system, and adding one yourself can get your app rejected after two weeks of waiting in line at the approval station.
4) DO NOT export iOS icons with an alpha channel. This is not supported in iOS or iTunes, nor will Xcode accept the files. Your exported image must be 24-bit RGB only.
