The values from a magnetometer sensor, like the X, Y, and Z readings, do help in determining direction in navigation applications, including Google Maps on mobile devices. Here’s how it works:
Compass Orientation: The magnetometer senses the Earth's magnetic field along the three axes (X, Y, Z). By analyzing the intensity and direction of this magnetic field, the device can calculate its orientation in relation to the Earth's magnetic north.
Heading Adjustment in Maps: The orientation data from the magnetometer is used by the phone to adjust the direction you’re facing within the map application. For example, if the magnetometer detects a certain change in direction, Google Maps can rotate the map display to show the new heading.
