SHOULD JUDGES ACCEPT EXPENSIVE GIFTS? Bible Ethics 101 - Supreme Court Scandal
Are our judges truly impartial? Or do expensive and luxurious gifts they accept from rich "benefactors" tilt their justice away from the poor and the innocent, and toward those who can afford to catch the judge’s eye and perhaps the judge’s favor?
If a judge really thinks gifts don’t affect the way we respond to issues related to the giver, should a judge like that be judging anything this side of a hotdog-eating contest?
Writers throughout the Bible quote messages from God about the high ethics God required of judges, and about the wretched failures of judges who accepted expensive gifts as bribes. But one good king, Jehoshaphat, may have said it best when he commissioned judges in cities all over his Jewish kingdom of Judah.
“Think about what you’re doing when you handle these cases. You’re not conducting city business. You’re conducting the LORD’s business. Take this job that seriously. The LORD is with you when you deal with these cases. Honor the LORD by doing your job with integrity. Remember that God doesn’t twist justice, show favoritism, or take bribes. You don’t, either” (2 Chronicles 19:6-7).
