Gatsby Redux Promo
Gatsby Redux was originally created for the Los Angeles Music Center event, Moves After Dark. Three Los Angeles dance companies were invited to create work for Frank Gehry’s gorgeous Walt Disney Hall. MeMT Artistic Director/Choreographer Janet Roston was inspired by the Blue Ribbon Garden and the Keck Amphitheater to create choreography filled with love triangles, intimate dance among the trees and waves of movement from a large ensemble. Using The Great Gatsby as a theatrical departure point, Roston explored the spatial relationships found in the formality of the Keck Amphitheater, the tight intimacy of the gardens and the vast plaza, which provided open space to challenge the dancers and offers a wide perspective for the audience. In addition to dancers in white linen and flowing dresses the choreography incorporated 1920’s cartoons projected on the curved metal walls of Disney Hall. It was a vintage yet contemporary dance experience and the audience favorite of the night.
