Railways are electrified with both direct and alternating current (DC) at 50 Hz. The maximum voltage in a DC overhead contact system reaches 4000 V, while in an AC overhead contact system it reaches 29,000 V. Such high voltages can cause electrocution even at some distance from live parts.
