Milking Hippo Mom Bibi to Give Premature Baby Vital Nutrients
New mom Bibi walks into a chute and stands still while milk is collected for her premature calf. The baby is too weak to stand and nurse, so nursery and vet staff are working to build her strength. She was conditioned to lean in and remain still for weekly ultrasounds throughout her pregnancy. Because this behavior is routine for her, she has cooperated for twice-daily milkings. The milk is given to her premature calf along with a formula supplement until she is able to nurse on her own.
