I Remember The Salt
🌊 April 30th, 1975 is a historic day for my family, for the Vietnamese diaspora in my hometown Rosemead, CA, for any Vietnamese person today.
It marks the end of the Vietnam War 🏳 the “Fall of Saigon” and is known by different names between the victors and the defeated that day.
In Northern & communist regions of Vietnam, it’s called “Liberation Day”, in Southern & democratic regions, including most Vietnamese in the Diaspora outside of Vietnam, it’s known as “The Day We Lost Our Country”.
The massive waves of Vietnamese Boat People 🛶 attempting to escape to safer lands for their future and freedom is what my family history is inextricably tied up in.

This performance led me to win the title Pho King 👑 for the 2022 Pho King Of The Island 🏝 hosted by the Vietnamese Student Association at UC Santa Barbara. Pho King is an annual male pageant amongst the Southern California VSA’s to represent and redefine the Asian-American Male identity in the face of historic racism, emasculation, and stereotypes.
