why roads are black
The black roads are generally asphalt roads. Asphalt uses asphalt cement (AC, often incorrectly called “tar”) as a binder to hold the aggregate (rocks and sand) together, and AC is black. Especially when the pavement is new, everything is totally coated with the jet-black AC.
As an asphalt road ages, however, its appearance tends to change, especially its color. In most of the eastern US, asphalt is composed of AC and limestone aggregate. The limestone is usually white or off-white. As the surface of the asphalt wears, the top surface of AC abrades away and allows the clean stone to shine through. The combination of the whitish stone and the still-black AC between the stones gives the appearance of a shade of gray. In other parts of the US, the aggregates used in asphalt are varying shades of red and white in combination, and the worn pavement can appear coral or even pink in color.
Of course, concrete roads are never black — even though they could be black, or just about any other color. Neat concrete cures out a light gray, but concrete can easily be dyed before placement to practically any color. This is done regularly in applications like landscaping and sidewalk placement and interior floors.
As others have noted, the majority of roads are paved with asphalt and asphalt roads tend to be black or dark gray in color largely because the asphalt cement (bitumen) is a petroleum product that is dark brown to black in hue. Asphalt is the most widely used material for pavements because of its drivability characteristics: It is smooth, cost-effective, and quick and easy to construct and maintain with minimal delay for drivers.
That said, the color of a pavement can vary depending upon the color of the aggregates used, the use of additives to adjust the hue, or the use of tintable alternative
I will tend to agree that most roads eventually turn black from tire wear, but they don't always start out black.
Roads that start out black are typically asphalt concrete. Asphalt is made with a bituminous material that starts out black. The picture below is of bitumen.
According to Wikipedia, bitumen is defined as a black viscous mixture of hydrocarbons obtained naturally or as a residue from petroleum distillation. It is used for road surfacing and roofing.
An asphalt concrete mix actually contains aggregate as well as a bituminous mixture. The color of the rock may show in some cases
Not all roads are black.
Concrete roads are naturally white. They can be coloured by adding material to the mixture.
Roads formed by setting gravel into a bitumen/asphalt (sheeted gravel or similar) are the colour of the local gravel. It can vary from grey to blue to brown to orange.
A gravel road in Tasmania (Western Explorer) is blinding white, as the gravel used was waste from a silica mineral mined to make lenses. While most roads have black surface,
Black colour of roads is anti glaring and absorbs the spread of reflect of rays. Otherwise, other coloured road could cause great in convenience to the drivers regarding close and far visibility that could ultimately lead to countless major accidents.
Asphalt Roads get their color in two ways. The first is from the asphalt that is used to bind the aggregate together. Asphalt is a thick black tar like substance that is black in color. The second source of color is the aggregate that is used. In most parts of the country, gray stone is used as aggregate and so the roads start out jet black and then wear to a light gray color as the stone surface is exposed. In some areas of the country a red stone is used and so the roads actually wear to a brick red color.
'cause they're made up of Bitumen and stones. Bitumen is black and sticky and coats the stones completely. So the road is black.
Not all roads are black, those that are will be so because they are made with a covering of asphalt which is black or with stones and black tar.
