In the early 1970s, dragster builder Bill Fredrick, famous for the Valkyrie jet car, and five-time land speed record holder Craig Breedlove of Spirit of America fame, both built far-out rocket cars for the drag strip. Fredrick called his rocket dragster “Courage of Australia.” Breedlove’s started out as “Screaming Yellow Zonker,” then he renamed it “English Leather Special.” For both men, it was a first step toward a bigger goal of building a full-sized rocket car to break the land speed record. This is the story of how Fredrick’s and Breedlove’s rocket dragsters came to be built, and the drag strip rivalry that developed between them.
