Arnaldo Rossi Explains Vite Maritata
Grape vines married to trees: Viti Maritata. It's a super old practice that was popular in the the Mezzadria days but goes all the way back to the Etruscans. Farmers would plant a small variety of oak and at the same time plant a pair of vines on either side of it. They generally planted a mix of varieties in order to increase the odds that some of the vines would thrive whatever each years weather conditions happened to be. Vineyards like this are exceedingly rare. Arnaldo has an excellent healthy vineyard and gives a great and thorough explanation of these vines in trees.
