use of ZU + ADJECTIVE in German
The combination of "zu" and an adjective expresses a negative quality of an object. Something is too much, an excess of a quality. It can generate displeasure or disagreement with the measure, size, or intensity of something. That is, the person expressing it considers something inadequate or unacceptable.
We can use two simple structures:
1. We add "mir" after the verb - before "zu"
2. "Für mich"
EXAMPLE:
"Die Schuhe sind mir zu alt"
(In this example, we mean that the shoes are very worn out, very used. Therefore, for me, they are very old.)
"Die Schuhe sind zu alt für mich"
(In this example, we mean that the shoes look somewhat outdated, like old or out of fashion, and I don't like them.)
