Safe Roads for All
Situated between #CostaRica’s Tapantí-Macizo de la Muerte National Park, Los Quetzales National Park and Los Santos Forest Reserve is Route 2, where an estimated 3,500 wild animals — including #oncillas, #tapirs and #quetzals —are victims of automobile #traffic each year. Panthera at this study site is:
🚘 Collecting roadkill data
🎤 Interviewing community members to see what species are prevalent in the area
📸 Setting up remote cameras
🧹 Cleaning out culverts as temporal wildlife passages
🎨 Painting murals, signs and other art to promote safe passages
✏️ Proposing measures to reduce the impact
Panthera, in collaboration with the country’s Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Transportation, have been working on the Wild Cats Friendly Road Project for over a decade, ensuring safe passageways and implementing strategies to conserve jaguars, margays and all wildlife from becoming victims of the road. Panthera participates at a predominantly women-led committee consisting of members from MOPT, PROGAS, VAVS, CONAGEBIO, MINAE, SINAC, Costa Rica Silvestre, HSI, PNUD and CONAVI, this coalition of conservationists works diligently — at a national level — finding science-based solutions to reduce #wildlife road fragmentation.
