In this chapter, we see the great diversity in the quality of the Law of Moses, which God gave to his people through Moses, a Bronze Age lawgiver. His law is a mixture of common sense in some matters and harshness, especially regarding the condition of women. It is from this chapter that the obligation for a raped girl to marry her rapist emerged (his punishment being that he could not divorce his wife). Jesus judges this way: "Matthew 19:8 'Because of your hardness of heart,' he said to them, 'Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so.'"
