As you know, by default, Ableton Live sorts your plugins by manufacturer. As you accumulate them through the years, I promise, you’ll forget what they are, or that you even have them.
You’ll end up using the same 4 plugins all the time, and that’s a shame, ‘cos you paid for all of them… right? Anyway, here’s how you fix it: in Ableton Live 10 and higher, click on Collections - Edit. Various colors will show up. You can rename them to whatever you want pressing cmd+R on Mac or ctrl+R on Windows.
You can then assign your VST or AU plugins by right clicking on them and choosing the collection you want. The same plugin can live in more than 1 collection, which is useful for plugins like channel emulations.
I promise you, do this and next time you’re mixing you’ll be able to focus on the music and stop spending hours looking for an eq or a compressor in your plugin folder.
