Vintage 1HP 10" Benchtop Grinder Restoration, Teardown PT.1 RARE Model 5468 7595 Thor Power Tool Co
So, this grinder would have been my Great Grandfathers. Thor Power Tool Co. was rebranded in 1953 from the original Independent Pneumatic Tool Co. which itself was derived from Aurora Automatic Machinery Co. created in 1905 to sell pneumatic tools. Independent Pneumatic Tool wanted to focus on Motorcycles. The hand tool market was thriving and the motorcycle business was dwindling and in 1918, was dropped altogether.
In 1954, Thor acquired Speedway Manuf. Co. In 1964 Thor was acquired by Stewart-Warner.
I believe this grinder to be from circa 1950s, as in 1953 they became Thor.
I have never seen another example of this grinder in size of wheels (being 10") or casting shape. Worked hard on this one, stay tuned for part 2! Enjoy!
