Philips 50PUS8545 Review: An Android TV with Flagship Features at a Non-Flagship Price
The Philips 50PUS8545 TV is part of the second-generation Performance line. This means it's a highly-charged Android TV in the mid-price segment. Its advantages will be appreciated by buyers who aren't looking for the cheapest option, but rather for additional features at a reasonable price. These include Android TV itself, the best platform for smart TVs thanks to a significantly larger number of available apps, including the ability to install apps via APK files for advanced users. It also features the unique Ambilight backlighting, which has already received much praise and continues to evolve year after year. And a favorite feature of all settings enthusiasts: extensive sound and picture control options unmatched by other TV manufacturers. The 2020 Philips Performance TV lineup uses a new vertical pixel alignment matrix, which delivers improved brightness (incidentally, up from 350 to 400 nits), contrast, and black levels compared to traditional IPS panels. We're pleased to see that customers also appreciated the first generation of the Performance lineup, which we recommended last year: according to the manufacturer, sales of these TV models increased by 75% compared to the previous year, when they were known simply as the 7000 series. The Philips 50PUS8545 also impressed us, earning it another "We Recommend" award. It's also worth noting that all of the above also applies to the other models in the lineup, with screen sizes of 43, 65, and 70 inches.
