The Dubliners and The Pogues made Dirty Old Town famous but was initially written by Ewan MacColl in 1949. It was inspired by the town called Salford, Lancashire, England where MacColl (his real name was James Henry Miller 1915-1989) was born and raised. The lyrics describe the landscape of chimneys typical for a North of England industrial town in 1949 as an awkward scene.
