In this video, we'll chase a loaded grain train from Athens to Gainesville, GA up the famed Gainesville Midland. As a bonus, this train sported a pair of SD70MAC rebuilds on the point, with the lead unit being a recently-refurbished flared MAC at the time of filming. We'll also take a look back at a few grain trains when CSX was still using manned helpers on full 65-car unit trains, a very cool operation and unique for this area of the country at the time. Sadly, this operation does not exist today as trains are split between Pilgrim's Pride facilities in Athens and Gainesville, resulting in shorter trains up the Midland. Still, locomotives and their engineers must work hard to get the loads up and over the rolling hills and steep grades of the GM Sub, a real treat to witness.
