With an admittedly deeply heartfelt story about an unhealthy and one-sided relationship, A Beautiful Meadow doesn't always hit the mark. Robin once again proves themselves as one of the only Celeste community members who can actually write a compelling story, but it occasionally falls flat due to just extreme overabundance of dialogue and unnecessary line breaks. When you're not reading through dialogue, the gameplay is often moderately jank and doesn't really have a consistent flow.
It's not all bad, though - the best rooms gameplay wise are in checkpoints 5 and 6, where the map gets freedom to just explore as many ideas as possible instead of confining itself to cardinal bumpers and Factory Helper. These checkpoints are fun, bouncing from one mechanic to another and building to a final room containing all of them in sequence. The gameplay throughout the entire thing is at least unique, and while originally I was super turned off by the visuals, I'm seeing them more now as a symbolic way of telling the story. The beautiful meadow - the high of the unhealthy relationship - was never really that beautiful after all, it just seemed beautiful in comparison to the lows or something.
Make no mistake, when the story and gameplay of this map hit, they hit some incredible highs. But for me, I spent quite a bit of time being bored and annoyed. My experience is unique, just like this map; don't get turned off by this, try it yourself. It's worth playing just for cp5 and 6.
