GREEN MEADOW
HISTORY
Green Meadow is the top cocktail of East Germany. The name comes from the rich green color the drink takes on after the ingredients are mixed. Besides Blue Curaçao and orange juice, only Rotkäppchen sparkling wine is needed.
INGREDIENTS
4 cl Blue Curaçao
16 cl orange juice
4 cl sparkling wine (Rotkäppchen dry)
Garnish: Fruit skewer
PREPARATION
Pour the Curaçao and orange juice into a highball glass filled with ice and top with ice-cold sparkling wine. Serve with a fruit skewer and a straw.
MOULIN ROUGE
HISTORY
Many associate Moulin Rouge with Paris and the famous cabaret in the Montmartre district. In East Germany, however, it was a delicious, sweet cocktail.
This drink requires three ingredients: peach liqueur, dry red wine, and orange juice.
INGREDIENTS
4 cl peach liqueur (or apricot liqueur)
1/8 L orange juice
2 cl dry red wine, Kadarka
PREPARATION
Pour the liqueur into a wine glass filled with ice and top with orange juice. Carefully pour the red wine into the glass over an inverted teaspoon (with the rounded end facing upwards!), so that the wine doesn't mix with the juice but remains on top as a red hue.
BALALAIKA
HISTORY
The Balalaika is a fruity and refreshing cocktail from East Germany made with three simple ingredients that everyone should have at home.
INGREDIENTS
4 cl orange juice
4 cl white Curaçao
4 cl brandy
Garnish: orange slice
PREPARATION
Shake the ingredients well with plenty of ice in a shaker and strain into a glass. It can also be easily decorated with an orange slice draped over the rim of the glass.
