Given the political and lifestyle upheavals he had to face, Arthur Polonsky (Полонский, Артур Морицевич) did very well to achieve his 90th year! He studied composition under Gliere at the Kyiv Conservatory, and joined the Red Army when it entered Kyiv in 1919. Having been involved in military musical activities he was demobbed in 1922, and played piano in the Karl Marx Garden in Rostov-on-Don. After a spell as a cinema pianist in Kyiv he moved to Moscow, where he established a career as a jazz musician and arranger, and latterly as a record producer and music editor. He is best known for a piece called 'Blooming May'. This piece appears in a mid-1960s Soviet light music compilation.
