a. PAP
Password Authentication Protocol

the username to be used is the username of the other end router (case sensitive)
the password is user defined and should be the same password on the other router
b. CHAP
Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol
Encrypted
"challenge handshake" term used for the encrypted username/password on PPP encapsulation
2. HDLC
High Level Data Link Control
used for leased line connection
Cisco Proprietary protocol
turned on by default on all Cisco Serial Interfaces

3. Frame-Relay
used for frame-relay connection
Reasons why protocol is down
a. clock rate issue
usually happens on laboratory environment
in real world, this is set by the ISP as requirement for the DCE side
b. encapsulation mismatch
encapsulation used on both sides should be the same to avoid this issue.
c. cable or interface issue
