How can AI art and indigenous wisdom make a global impact? Refik Anadol and Chief Nixiwaka Yawanawá
In summer 2023, Scorpios Mykonos played host to a collaborative digital artwork collection by AI artist Refik Anadol and the Yawanawá community, indigenous to the Brazilian Amazon. “Winds of Yawanawá” comprises of a 3D data sculpture on Mykonos and a small number of digital collectibles that immerse viewers in one of Earth’s most vital ecosystems, while reflecting the indigenous community’s deep connection with the forest. The artworks incorporate the work of young Yawanawá artists and harness weather data from the rainforest. Here, Refik Anadol and Chief Nixiwaka Yawanawá discuss the inspirations behind their artworks and how the wider world can learn from indigenous voices.
