If you say, “I hate self-promotion,” you owe it to yourself and your company to share your impact and value. Read my Getting Ahead book https://www.amazon.com/Getting-Ahead-... It will show you the power of self promotion and it's impact toward your career success.
Every day, you do things that:
• Deserve to be noticed. You contribute a huge amount of energy, time, and creativity to your organization.
• Provide value. Your contributions influence the bottom line of the whole organization.
• Create impact. Your talent, skills, and ideas influence your team and create positive change in your organization.
That’s why you need to be engaging in self-promotion—there’s no other way your contributions, value, and impact will be seen. Don't let "I hate self-promotion" mind-set stop you.
Can you sum up the most important ways you deliver value and impact to your organization? Think of the most important contribution you make, taking no more than 10 seconds to come up with it. Do you feel like you were able to present your impact accurately? Was your statement specific enough, while still representing the full breadth of what you contribute?
We all need to practice advocating for ourselves by sharing these contributions. People often think, “But I hate self-promotion,” because they always feel at a loss about what to say. It feels awkward to be called on to state their accomplishments because they’re unprepared. When we’re on the spot, we can’t always think of a contribution to share. We start second-guessing the accomplishments that come to mind. “Are they good enough? Do they really represent my main contributions?” we wonder.
What’s the solution? Keep your wins and accomplishments in the forefront of your mind. Be ready to share them at a moment’s notice. Be able to quickly summarize the main impacts you have on your organization. Envision what you’ll say next time you’re prompted to share them. That will almost guarantee you’ll come across as more confident and polished, while presenting your impact more accurately.
Next time you think, “I hate doing self-promotion,” think of a time when you shared an anecdote about an achievement and it didn’t feel so bad. Maybe you had a great story about how you overcame a hurdle. It probably didn’t even feel like self-promotion, because you weren’t consciously trying to promote yourself. It just happened naturally. Well, guess what—you can use the same tactic over and over to get the word out about what you contribute, which will grow your visibility in the organization.
