Extracting a partial dataset from the entire dataset can sometimes be necessary. The idea behind this is to create analyses that only require a fraction of the existing variables. For example, the Socioeconomic Panel contains a large number of variables, of which only a very small fraction is needed in analyses. To gain a better overview, you can exclude certain variables and thus reduce the dataset width.
