In this lesson, we leave amplitude-based modulation behind and introduce the angle modulation family.
We keep the carrier amplitude constant and put the message into the angle of the carrier instead. From there, two natural schemes appear: Frequency Modulation (FM), where the message controls the instantaneous frequency, and Phase Modulation (PM), where the message controls the instantaneous phase.
Topics covered:
why we move the message from amplitude to angle
instantaneous frequency intuition with a hero animation
FM vs PM, side by side, on the same message
modulation index beta and how it splits FM into narrowband and wideband
Carson rule of thumb for FM bandwidth
