This is the nineteenth video of a video series on Multicast VPNs (MVPN) and their implementation on both IOS and IOS-XR routers with a focus on CCIE candidate requirements.
In this video, we further explore the Next Generation MVPN framework as defined in RFC 6513 (Next Generation MVPN Framework) and RFC 6914 (BGP MVPN). Our focus continues on RFC 6914 by introducing the Source Active A-D route.
First we take a deep dive into the structure of the Source Active A-D route and it's application in both RPT-SPT style MVPNs as well as SPT-Only style MVPNs.
We explore the peculiar problem of SPT switchover in an RPT-SPT MVPN and how, unsolved, it can lead to permanent traffic duplication.
Next we focus on how the Source Active A-D route solves the issue by allowing the C-RP's PE to generate an S,G,RPT Prune route towards the C-RP. We end the video by following the control plane formation as well as the forwarding plane and multicast packet forwarding, without duplication, over the MVPN when the Source Active A-D route is utilized.
