What is Samhain? | About Halloween | Witch's New Year
Join Melissa Paone Somma, the Chakra Witch as she talks about the Pagan Sabbat (holy day) of Samhain, also known as Halloween--the Witch's New Year.
Literally translating in Gaelic to "Summer's End", Samhain marks the time when the sun dies and rests in peace until his rebirth during the Winter Solstice.
Samhain is also the night when the veil between this world and the Otherworld was lifted, allowing humans to reunite with their lost loved ones and ancestors.
As the border between summer and winter, and lightness and darkness, Samhain is a celebration of Death. It is a festival of completion to show gratitude for both the labor sown and the bounty reaped throughout the year.
Because this is a festival of completion, it is what Witches consider the feast of the New Year. We reflect on what has been done, what has been learned, and what still needs to be done. And we set intentions and goals for the magickal year to come!
