The human body is meant to move, with over 360 joints and around 700 skeletal muscles that allow for fluid motion.
When you don't move, what happens to your body? Sitting for long periods can cause numbness and swelling in your limbs. This is because sitting puts pressure on delicate tissues, such as nerves, arteries, and veins, and can cause blockages in these areas.Additionally, sitting deactivates an enzyme called lipoprotein lipase, which breaks down fats in the blood. What happens to the brain when you sit for long periods of time? Long periods of being stationary reduce blood flow and the amount of oxygen entering your bloodstream through your lungs.
Both are important for keeping your brain alert, so your concentration levels will likely decrease as your brain activity slows. Studies show that sitting for long periods is linked with some types of cancers, heart disease, and can contribute to diabetes, kidney, and liver problems. Inactivity is responsible for about 9% of all premature deaths worldwide, which equates to over 5 million people per year. However, the solutions to this issue are simple. If you have to sit, try to sit upright instead of slouching, and if you can, move around more frequently.
