The term "monocultures" quickly conjures up images of huge wheat fields or palm oil plantations. But there are also monocultures that develop unnoticed on our doorstep. They have been created insidiously by the intensification of agriculture to feed our livestock. We are talking about rich pastures. In spring, they often shine with flowering dandelions and buttercups. But appearances are deceptive, because all the blossoms of these few robust plants mean that no other plant species can assert themselves. For where, for example, are the orchids, the irises and the marsh gentian? And where are the wild bees, skylarks, grasshoppers, field hamsters and bumblebees?
We are experiencing the biggest mass extinction since the end of the dinosaurs, right on our doorstep. And we are the only ones who can stop it - even quite easily. Niklas Weber's new short film "MONO - biodiversity in danger" deals with just that.
