How do you name a business, a child or even a pet? What is your criteria? Do you borrow names, copy, imitate and modify or invent? What is in a name? Well, it's been said that a rose by any other name will smell as sweet.
Metactuation is the name we settled on.
We'll be engaging on DIY/ prototyping, design and fabrication, We fancy anything that requires creation, with a challenging twist of complexity.
This project has been all about bringing the name and logo to life. We took upon the challenge to develop the logo on inkscape. These special characters denote, infinity triangle - the twist of complexity, and here, I/O for electronics, as well as the gear for motion, with forward motion. The black white and silver, has a color of metal, much of what we'd work with. It was a learning curve, for a first, yet fun.
We decided to put it on a 4mm acrylic sheet, laser engrave, then light it up with an LED strip.
First, we made the base, this is both the lights holder and the perspex sheet holder.
We used a piece of Meru Oak.
This entails squaring one side on the table saw. We then used this flat side to square up the opposite side and repeated this for the other two sides.
The next step is to cut a rabbet in the wood that will house both the LED strip, and the laser engraved perspex sheet.
We then moved to layout the design on the stock, before routing out a recess for hiding away all LED controls.
The plunge router chewed this recess ideally, we then made two holes on each end to round over the LED strip within the stock.
What was left was positioning, and hot gluing. This happened smoothly.
The next step was to raster engrave acrylic on the fibre laser, sorry, we did capture the recording, but here is a 10000% sped up time lapse of an equivalent engrave on plywood.
We fitted the perspex sheet, unwrapped the acrylic, and then, lit it up.
Names, branding, logos, all these things serve to give an identity, it's been said that words have meaning and names have power.
