Ni'Erica plays the character Gemma Rose in Sense of Self. In this touching and emotional video, Ni'Erica discusses the trials of being accepted in a world that can be comfortable at shunning instead of accepting. Her testimony reveals one person in particular, made her feel loved and accepted and that's what's kept her surviving in finding her Sense of Self.
What is Sense of Self about?
Sense of Self is a love story about an overwhelmed, former singer in an unhappy marriage fighting to keep their outreach home for transgender women open.
It's a portrayal of transgender women of color, that showcases the struggles, joys, and triumphs of its heroines, four of which are played by trans women of color. There is room for more than one trans movie or television show. Their narratives are worthy to be told. Black trans women are furthest in the margins, their deaths and injustice go unnoticed by the community and the media. With your help, we can bring their stories to the center for greater visibility.
What does Sense of Self mean?
Sense of self is the perception of oneself: how they feel about themselves, their levels of self-esteem, and confidence or lack thereof. Some people have a strong sense of self, while others are still on the journey to discovering what their sense of self is.
