Wow, this was a blast! Giving short layers to extraordinarily thick, long hair can be intimidating. But not for me—though it can be for a lot of people, both those cutting and those getting cut. The razor makes it a breeze. I like to carve little petals throughout to keep it soft and light, avoiding that bulky look. This is why I prefer using a razor over scissors. I learned to work with this hair type early on, inheriting a massive clientele from my boss when he moved back to Tokyo in the 90s. I quickly figured out that deep carving into thick hair helps it grow out beautifully, with manageable layers that sit perfectly. Within five years of my career, almost all my haircuts were carved from the inside out.
Now I get to teach you guys! I'm doing a live virtual class next month for those who can't come to see me in person. Don't forget to join my email list above here: https://jaynematthews.com/
I styled this haircut using just my hands—no blow dryer needed. It was pretty much dry by the time I finished. I applied some hair balm mixed with a bit of hair oil for a subtle shine, and voilà!
