Alcohols are a class of organic compounds characterized by the presence of a hydroxyl functional group (-OH) attached to a saturated carbon atom. Alcohol classes are defined according to the number of hydroxyl groups attached to a single carbon atom.

Primary alcohols: These are alcohols that have a single hydroxyl group attached to a primary carbon atom (CH3OH, ethanol).

Secondary alcohols: These alcohols have a hydroxyl group attached to a secondary carbon atom (CH3CH(OH)CH3, propan-2-ol).

Tertiary alcohols: These are alcohols that have a hydroxyl group attached to a tertiary carbon atom (CH3C(CH3)2OH, 2-methylpropan-2-ol).

The nomenclature of alcohols follows the rules established by the IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry). To name an alcohol, follow these steps:

Identify the main chain containing the hydroxyl group.
Number the carbon atoms of the main chain so that the hydroxyl group has the lowest possible number.
Add the prefix corresponding to the number of hydroxyl groups (ethanol, propan-1-ol, propan-2-ol).
Use appropriate prefixes and suffixes to indicate substituents, the position of the hydroxyl group, and any other specific characteristics of the molecule.

These nomenclature conventions are essential for correctly identifying and naming alcohols, thus facilitating communication in the field of organic chemistry.
