During my trip to Panama, I visited the Miraflores Locks, one of the three locks that form part of the Panama Canal.
Amazed to observe those gigantic ships passing through such a narrow man-made channel with an extreme precision. One pass costs around $300K, cash, no other payment types of whatsoever is accepted! Seems like a lot maybe but think again, considering the amount of time (insurance also) and fuel saved by making your way through this channel.
The world map as we know it is constructed with the Mercator Projection, a mathematical formula depicted to place a 3D object onto 2D paper. What it does basically is destorting size of huge continents and makes them appear way smaller than they actually are. You realize this when you’re actually traveling! One of my flights from Argentina to Panama was just a little over 6 hours with a total ground distance to be covered more than 2900 nautical miles! Seems like a smaller distance when you look at the map!
