Why research climate change in a poor African
country?
Our two fellow scientists, Zuzanna and Lenka,
spent three weeks in Zambia, Africa, researching
climate change.
Let's look at the details in a series of short
videos with their engaging story.
Why do research in Zambia?
Zambia is one of the least developed countries,
which means that our according to classification
of the World Bank, it belongs one of amongst
the poorest countries in the world.
And this is the reason why Zambia is quite
one of the most important recipient countries
of International Development Cooperation.
And lots of this money goes to projects
oriented on sustainable livehoods.
And by sustainable livelihoods
I mean for example support of of climate,
smart agriculture, some market value chains,
etcetera, etcetera.
And what is important is that this
projects are happening in broad social ecological
context.
So it means that what happened in the nature
influence the society and it was happening
in the society
influence the nature. And if you are aiming
at implementing projects focused on sustainable
livelihoods, so we need to understand the
context of both.
So we need to understand the natural conditions,
but also we need to understand the societal
conditions.
So in these terms are our main motivation
was to map diverse social ecological linkages
in cooperation with one of the biggest Czech
NGO's active in development cooperation called
People in Need.
And to support them and implementation of
their projects by bringing in a new information
on especially these social aspect of the social ecological system.
Is it typical to do social science research
with an international development cooperation?
Indeed, for case of Czech Republic is not that
common.
The assistance
provided by the academia is very often through
some, let's say technical projects or academia
advising NGOs in how to implement different
agricultural practices or how to establish
fish ponds etc etc.
But for example in Germany or Great Britain,
Sweden and other, I would say Western donors.
So it's very often, and this is of course
quite understandable because if we don't do
not critically reflect on what's happening
in the society, we simply cannot expect our
desired outcomes of the project.
So this is actually really crucial to connect
development cooperation with social science
research.
